The Akwa Ibom State Government has provided computers and other electronic gadgets to the prisons or Non- Custodial Unit, Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command.
This is part of the State Government support to the Nigerian Correctional Service in respect to non custodial sentencing in the State.
The items donated are computers, cameras, printers, scanners and other essential work tools that will aid in the profiling of convicts and overall efficiency of the unit.
The Non Custodial Unit is one of the recent reforms introduced by the Controller General of Corrections, Ja’afaru Ahmed.
The unit implements all non custodial sentencing in the Country which includes; community services, probation, parole, restorative justice and any other non custodial sentencing as enshrined in the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
The Controller of Corrections, Akwa Ibom State Command, Alex Oditah, who presented the items to the unit in his office, said that the donations were very timely during this period of COVID-19 pandemic as they would boost output and morale of Officers in the Unit.
He commended Udom Emmanuel, the executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State for supporting the unit.
The Officer-in-charge of the Non-Custodial unit, Imabong Udoh, who recieved the items, thanked the Controller for his immense support and promised to judiciously manage the resources and items from the State Government.
