A first year student of Microbiology at the University of Benin, Edo State, Vera Omozuwa was said to have been raped and killed, while reading inside a church.
The 22-year-old student reportedly died Friday, even as her attackers allegedly smashed her head with a fire extinguisher, before leaving her unconscious. The incident took place around the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City.
Already, the authorities of the university has decried the barbaric rape and subsequent murder of lare Miss Vera Omozuwa.
Omozuwa was later rushed to the intensive care unit of a hospital, where she was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Meanwhile, there is a groundswell of condemnation of the brutal murder of Omozuwa by her friends and relations in Benin City, who have asked security agencies to unravel her killers.
This was even as the authorities of the university has decried the news of the rape and subsequent murder of one of its students, Miss Vera Omozuwa.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Salami, has reacted to Omozuwa's murder.
A statement signed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, PRO, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, described the new as not only shocking but condemnable, adding that such actions should not be condoned by any society.
According to her, the trauma of the current COVID-19 pandemic was already hard on everyone and compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family was a wicked act.
Commiserating with the bereaved's family on the loss of their daughter, Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest just as he urged students of the institution and indeed all young people to be wary of the company they kept and the places they visited.
A delegation of the university's management had been sent by to commiserate with the bereaved family.
