The National Executive Committee, NEC', meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, may be held at Aso Rock, Abuja, Thursday without the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the factional national chairman, Abiola Ajimobi.
The NEC meeting was convened by the Acting National Chairman Victor Giadom, who is being backed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The NEC meeting is the first since the former National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole was ousted from the position.
Giadom, who is being backed by Buhari as the authentic acting National Chairman, has called the NEC meeting after consultations with APC governors and senior party members. Buhari indicated his interest to attend the crucial party meeting, going by the statement by his Senior Special Assistant ton Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Shehu said Buhari would be “acting on the position of the law,’’ saying:
“The President has received very convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned and has determined that the law is on the side of Victor Giadom as Acting National Chairman.
“Because he will always act in accordance with the law, the President will be attending the virtual meeting Giadom called for tomorrow afternoon.
“We urge the media to stop promoting manufactured controversies and to not give any further room for mischievous interpretations of the law on this matter.
“In addition to the President, the Giadom meeting will, hopefully, be attended by our governors and the leaders of the National Assembly.”
According to the notice of meeting, the President, Vice-President, NWC members, all APC governors, leadership of the National Assembly, past chairmen, are expected at the Villa tomorrow for the NEC meeting excluding Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and some of his political associates including Oshiomhole and possibly Ajimobi.
In its report on the issue, Persecondnews stated that, "One man that will not attend is Tinubu; he is not a member of APC NEC, he is not a member of the APC NWC, he is not a member of the NASS, he is not the President, he is not the Vice- President and he is not a governor.’’
Giadom also hinted in an interview on Channels TV Wednesday evening that Tinubu was not invited for the meeting because he was not a member of NEC.
He simply asked his interviewers to check the APC constitution to know who are members of NEC.
In a tweet, a former Minister and member of the PDP, Femi Fani-Kayode said: “First Oshiomole is kicked out by the Court of Appeal. Then his preferred replacement, Ajimobi, falls into a coma. Then his arch rival, Giadom, is recognised by Buhari as National Chairman.
“Conclusion: it is over for Tinubu. He has been thrown under the bus and retired from politics!’’
The court had recognized Giadom who was the deputy National Secretary as the most qualified officer to act as chairman following the sack of Oshiomohole by the courts among the three factional chairmen currently laying claims to the leadership of the party.
